Do Men Wear Engagement Rings?

Despite it being more of the norm for women to wear engagement rings, men do also wear engagement rings.

Many men out there decide to wear their engagement ring on the ring finger of their right hand and some on the left. This all differs from culture to culture.

Others may choose to wear their ring as a necklace, depending on their personal preference. In regards to wearing your engagement ring, there are no rules. You can take a traditional or unique approach, the choice is yours!

In many traditions and cultures across the world like Chile, for instance, both men and women wear engagement rings to symbolise emotional commitment for a lifetime.

The Custom of Wearing Engagement Rings

The process behind engagement rings is that a man would present his bride with a ring after accepting his marriage proposal. It is believed that this tradition originated from Roman times in which wives wore rings attached to small keys which indicated their husband’s ownership.

Most people aim to stick to tradition when it comes to wearing engagement rings.

Usually,  the wedding band is placed first on the left ring finger and then the engagement ring is placed on top of it. Wearing the wedding ring first keeps it closer to your heart. This symbolises the bonded commitment between a couple.

The History of Men’s Engagement Rings

It was common back then for men to wear rings to display power, fortune, and wealth. 5000 years ago, ancient Egyptian civilisation wore engagement rings to symbolise love, passion and devotion.

Popularity in the tradition of men wearing wedding rings only started to build up in the early 20th Century. This tradition was influenced by a few major events such as World War II, the rise of feminism and changes in social economics.

During World War II, marriage rates took a huge increase. However, due to the war, many couples were forced to part ways. Soldiers had no choice but to leave their families to work in the front

in order to remember their wives they left behind. Some see it as pain relief from the separation. This is where the sentimental meaning stems from with wedding rings today.

Why Haven’t Men Traditionally Worn Engagement Rings?

Historically, when a man gave an engagement ring to his partner it was a symbol of paying a dowry for a woman’s hand in marriage. This isn’t the case anymore regarding the meaning of an engagement ring.

It is still common for men to propose to their partner with a ring, but it wasn’t

common for men to get one in return.Today, an engagement  ring symbolises love and commitment and the recipient of the ring is making a decision to marry their other half.

In What Cultures Do Men Wear Engagement Rings?

Engagement rings are most common in many countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Sweden, Colombia, Cuba, Peru, and Chile. Men have been wearing engagement rings for generations. This is as it is part of their culture and it shows homage to their heritage. In Argentina, the tradition is that engagement rings are made out of silver, while wedding rings are made of gold.

In Chile, both men and women wear engagement rings on their right hand and once they’re married they will move them to the left. This depicts the transition from engagement to marriage.

Why Do Men Not Wear Rings During Engagement?

One reason why men did not wear engagement rings was due to a concept from ancient Rome, where women were given rings to signify their engagement to be married. As time progressed, this tradition spread amongst other cultures and became standard for women.

In addition to that, engagement rings were traditionally seen as an indication of a man’s commitment to his fiancee, instead of the other way around. Usually, men would display their commitment by proposing marriage and offering an engagement ring to their partner.

So, it is clear tha men would give more than receive in regard to engagement rings and their partners.

What Percentage Of Men Wear Engagement Rings?

In regards to the percentage of men that wear engagement, there are a few studies and surveys that have been conducted. The statistics based on men wearing engagement rings are on the rise. Some statistics include:

  • An estimate reports a 56% increase in men searching for engagement rings since 2007.
  • Another study shows that 67% of men are open to wearing an engagement ring.
  • 17% of men surveyed that they would wear an engagement ring

With this being said, it is evident that nowadays it is continuously getting more common for men to get engagement rings. Some may argue that the reason for the steady increase is due to couples seeking new and unique ways to express their love and commitment to one another.

What Sort of Ring to Buy for a Man

There are many male engagement rings out there available for men, but whatever ring you decide to get all depends on your partner’s preferences. However, there are a few things to take into account when choosing that perfect engagement ring for your other half. Some of these factors include:

  • Width – Width is an important factor when choosing an engagement ring for a man. Women’s engagement rings usually have bands of similar width, whereas men have more options.

A variety of options is needed for men as they tend to have larger hands that can vary in size depending on height and weight. Thicker wedding bands tend to be more comfortable for men with larger hands or even those who have more hands-on lifestyles or careers.

Wedding bands that have a smaller or thinner width would be more suitable for those with smaller or thinner fingers.

  • Metal – All metals used to make rings are completely different. However, they’re still designed to be durable and fight against day-to-day life.

When deciding what type of metal to buy, it is key to take your daily activities and career into account. This is due to some jobs being more active and hands-on in comparison to others. If you work in an industry like that, it may be beneficial to purchase a ring with a material that suits you and your lifestyle. If you are wondering what metal type may suit you best, negotiate with your jeweller as they will be able to give you an in depth insight on what metal will suit your lifestyle in terms of wearability and durability.

There is a wide range of materials in which you can get a ring. Some of these are:

  • Platinum – Platinum rings are visually appealing and durable making them one of the most popular metal choices for men’s engagement rings. Another benefit of platinum is that the metal does not reveal its scratches like gold for instance.
  • White Gold, Yellow Gold and Rose Gold – This selection of gold is also a valid option for men’s engagement rings. Despite them all being gold, they have their differences and also advantages and disadvantages.

Yellow gold gives off a warm hue that will never go out of style, making it traditional and timeless.

White gold usually reflects the sparkle of any diamonds on the ring, this gives the illusion that the stones are bigger.

Rose gold is made from a combination of pure gold and copper. Some may argue that rose gold is the most romantic of the bunch due to its pink-like tint. Given the fact that copper is such a strong metal mixing it with rose gold also makes this type of ring durable.

  • Stainless steel – Stainless steel is a more affordable metal compared to those mentioned earlier. This may be a good buying point for those who want an inexpensive ring. However, styles of stainless steel rings can be limited and the resizing of the band can be difficult.
  • Tungsten Carbide – Recently, tungsten has become more popular with men and its level of durability is a strong point for this ring. This metal is also tougher than stainless steel and you can buy it in darker colours or even have it plated.

It must be noted, this ring can be difficult to size as in order to do so you’ll have to go to a specialist for any kind of modification or repair the ring may require due to the rigidity and toughness of the metal. But, it is guaranteed that this is a material that will last.

It is clear that there is no complete winner when it comes to the selection rings. Each of them have their pros and cons. It is vital that you gain a thorough understanding of each ring type and what they’re about in order for you to purchase the right ring that suits your needs and lifestyle.
